Keyword gap analysis for search engine optimization identifies opportunities – queries that your site does not rank or rank less. They can help ensure your product and related information appear clearly in organic results.
The process is always called “content analysis,” but the latter is a broader tactic that includes identifying missing pages such as FAQs and missing steps in the sales funnel – as well as keyword gaps.
Tools
The fastest way to identify keyword gaps is to search questions to search your direct competitors rank, and you don’t.
Two premium tools, Semrush and Ahrefs, make keyword gap analysis easy. The free tool, The Hoth, helps but with limited features.
Semrush analyzes keywords for organic and paid search. Enter your domain or subdomain with up to five competitors. The more competitors you enter, the more opportunities Semrush opens, providing a list of “Top Opportunities” and a Venn diagram for “Keyword Overlap”.

You can also compare rankings at the domain or URL level. The latter helps for multi-niche businesses and competitors in each.
Ahrefs keyword gap analysis works the same as Semrush – search by domain, subdomain, directory, or URL.

A convenient feature in Ahrefs is to choose the number of keywords that overlap with competitors.
You can also filter questions by common words or exclude opportunities that include words. It is useful to look for opportunities in categories.
Ahrefs also analyzes search results pages, which is a huge time saver. It shows Google results for your targeted query, including how many domains link to each URL and their respective organic traffic estimates.
Ahrefs analysis of search results pages shows Google results for the target query (“white shirt” in this example), including how many domains link to each URL and an estimate of each organic traffic.
The Hoth is a free tool that works with data from Semrush for basic keyword gap reports. The report only includes search volume and cost per click for each keyword that you did not rank. The report can be downloaded as a CSV file to be imported into a spreadsheet and sorted by basic terms or amount of overlap.
