In late April, John Mueller announced to Google a change in the format of Google’s SEO office hours segment.
Historically, Mueller answered real-time search and SEO questions from site owners, webmasters, SEOs, and others to help them with sophisticated SEO help.
Mueller will now ask you to ask questions in advance, and he will save the answers and publish them later.
What a change. Here is a list of major changes to this SEO working time format.
Why the change. Mueller explained these changes in this April 29 video. He said the changes are due to the fact that it makes it easier for us to digest shorter videos and also helps him and Google staff “prepare for sessions” so that the answers are more accurate. He later added on Twitter that from four to one month is because “they are always quite time consuming for me, so I have to find a workable balance.”
Why do we care. Many SEOs called SEO working time a lifeline for their SEO issues or concerns. The opportunity to ask a Google employee directly about an SEO issue or get advanced technical SEO advice on the decision they need to make about their site has been a real boon to many SEOs. The ability to refer to the advice of Google representatives is also helpful when filing a complaint with your boss about investing in SEO.
I know a lot of SEOs who time-stamp every word they say in these hangouts, who use these call points to make better decisions, and who use these SEO hours to back up meetings with clients or their mentors.
Time will tell how these SEO opening hours will change over time, how useful they will remain, and whether this format will adapt again in the near future. However, the overall format of SEO working hours has not changed much in more than 10 years, beyond the platform used.
