Google Search Research Paper Says SEO Practices Tend To Be Very Poor Quality

A Google research paper titled Generative Models are Unsupervised Predictors of Page Quality gives a negative connotation to SEO practices. It has a section called “search engine optimization (SEO) attempts” that says, “documents that attempt SEO are usually flagged as very low quality.”

This paper was first pointed out by Roger Montti who asked if this research paper was what the useful content update was all about. I think Roger is right, this document seems, at least in part, to describe a lot of what updating useful content is all about.

The section goes on to say, “This is intuitive since these texts simply string together a series of keywords and are therefore incoherent. Furthermore, we found a moderate number of product pages and professional profiles that also attempt to perform some form of SEO. We noticed that media-oriented domains , such as image hosting domains, often contain incomprehensible embedded text, presumably for SEO.”

Pedro Dias, a former Google anti-spam fighter, now an SEO, noted this on Mastodon and said: “This is unfortunate wording by Google in their research “Generative models are unsupervised predictors of page quality” whitepaper. It is clear that SEO in general represents spam and contributes to “low quality”.

Pedro isn’t wrong, but Google’s John Mueller tried to downplay it by saying, “I think one of the challenges is that ‘good SEO’ is essentially invisible: it’s a well-structured page, it has good content, people like — that are not attributes associated with SEO on the larger web.” “I feel like it’s a losing battle to frame it as ‘not all SEO is bad,'” he added later. Keep in mind that Googlers like John Mueller and others have said that SEO is important and something that Google values, but then you have this research paper.. .

It’s sad to see this wording in Google’s research paper, but we know how much of a black eye the SEO industry has on the outside world. If you don’t know, just ask a layman about SEO and see what they say. You’d hope that someone who works at Google on search wouldn’t share such views, but Google is a big company.

In any case, it might make sense to read the research paper knowing that just because there is a patent document or research paper doesn’t mean Google is using it. But this one could very well be matched with a useful content update.
