LSU was committed by MJ Seo, a right-handed pitcher, shows special abilities

JUPITER, FLORIDA — MJ Seo was in his comfort zone on Thursday afternoon with a rubber toe on the big stadium mound.

Pitching at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium was just another day at the ballpark for the 18-year-old right-hander from Plano, Texas. This is because Seo is used to facing the highest competition at top pitch events.

This weekend, Seo and the rest of his 3n2 Sticks Baseball Brewster/White Sox Scout Team participated in the annual Perfect Game WWBA World Championship, one of the nation’s premier stick-ball tournaments.

“It means a lot,” Seo told SB Live. “Obviously all the best teams from around the country are in one place trying to win everything and have the same goal in mind. It means a lot, especially since this is my last travel ball tournament.

Hebron (TX) pitcher/shortstop MJ Seo showed off his skills in front of thousands of college and professional scouts this weekend at the Perfect Game Wood Bat World Championship in Jupiter, Florida. He is committed to LSU, but could have professional options after he graduates next spring.

Seo, a pitcher/shortstop, plays at Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas.

Seo, who is committed to sign with LSU, is no stranger to hitting in front of a large crowd of scouts. Few showcases have as many scouts as the WWBA World Championships.

“I saw they said there were 7,000 college and professional scouts here,” 3n2 Sticks coach Chase Brewster said. “I don’t know if it’s accurate, but it seems like 100,000. Everywhere you turn, there’s a ‘Who/Who’ and somebody, a bunch of special people.

Next summer, Seo will likely find himself with a decision to make after his senior season — attend LSU or sign professionally?

That will be a decision for a later date, after the 2023 MLB Draft.

“I’m going to go to LSU, that’s a priority,” he said. “Whatever happens, can happen. I’m focused on that. It’s a few months ahead. I live in the present.”

The Wooden Stick Tournament is one of Perfect Games’ premiere events. A year ago, three of the first four picks in the 2022 MLB draft played in the event: first pick Jackson Holliday (Baltimore Orioles), second pick Druw Jones (Arizona Diamondbacks) and fourth pick Termarr Johnson (Pittsburgh Pirates).

“It’s definitely special knowing that a lot of great players have come and played on the same courts as us,” Seo said. “It means a lot. It’s pretty cool.” While there are no projected first-rounders in this tournament, there are plenty who could go later in the first round, or certainly in the early rounds.

“He had a great summer for us and he’s turned himself into one of the top prospects in the country,” Brewster said. “We are extremely proud of him.”

Seo’s younger brother Minjae also plays for 3n2 Sticks Baseball. Minjae, a member of the class of 2025, has already committed to Vanderbilt.

Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium is home to the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals spring training home. Games are played on the backfields used by the big league clubs in spring training, and then the games are taken over by the Minor Leagues, keeping the complex active for most of the season.

Only a few selected games are played in the nearly 7,000-seat stadium. 3n2 Sticks Baseball Brewster is one of the teams whose game is streamed over the Internet.

For players, the PG tournament provides a platform to showcase their skills against the best of their peers.

“I’m just trying to show my arsenal on the mound and of course I’m trying to take good shots in the box and I’m trying to be a consistent player,” Seo said. “Whoever’s back there, coaches or scouts, it’s obviously great. I try to play the same game no matter what. Whether it’s 100 scouts or zero scouts. I try to play the same game. It doesn’t really change anything for me, but it’s definitely more exciting .

When not on the mound, Seo usually plays center field.

“MJ is one of the few kids that has really gotten both pre-game and post-game conditioning,” Brewster said. “He’s an extremely hard worker. He works out all the time. He does yoga. He does little things that some people might think are silly or take for granted. It’s made him a much better athlete and put his body in a position where he can do things, which he probably shouldn’t be able to do every three or four days.

A few weeks ago, Seo added meditation to her routine.

“Obviously, he’s an incredible hitter, so we have to watch when he pitches, before and after he pitches,” Brewster said. “He usually plays shortstop. He was our shortstop all summer. We’ll play him second after he’s called up and run him before he’s called up to make sure he’s fresh.”
