The SEO expert report shows the important things in 2023

The 2023 State of Tech SEO Report is out from digital marketing agency Aira and the Women in Tech SEO community. So what does it matter in 2023? Here’s a quick summary of some of the most interesting results.

Resources matter. The biggest risk the report highlighted was a lack of organizational resources. A lack of resources means that changes don’t happen or are very slow, which means less-than-stellar SEO results. Therefore, if you work in a company where resources are lacking, prioritizing tasks will continue to be very important.

Tools and technology that matter. Google Search Console was the most popular tool for technical SEOs overall: 92% reported using it. It was also the top tool used (78%) to measure organic search rankings.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider was a popular choice for crawling and analyzing log files. Meanwhile, Semrush was the best choice for evaluating a website’s search visibility.

For non-ecommerce platforms, technical SEOs preferred to work with WordPress. Wix was considered the most troublesome to work with.

Time matters. Unfortunately, waiting months for technical SEO changes to happen is quite common: 88% of respondents waited anywhere from one month to over 24 months for technical SEO changes to be made.

Perhaps a little surprising: 22% reported waiting only a month for technical SEO changes to be implemented. Meanwhile, 20% reported waiting 12 months (which was slightly down on the previous year). And 11% of respondents reported waiting 24 months or more.

Skills that matter. What are the top three skills a technical SEO should have? According to respondents:

It was surprising to see such a high content strategy. But as Steph Greaves pointed out in the report comments:

Technical SEO = Marketing. Search Engine Land contributor Mark Jackson has argued that SEO is marketing. So it was nice to see that marketing (74%) was the top answer to this specific internal question: “In your organization, on which team is responsibility for technical SEO?
