What percentage of your budget should go towards SEO?

What percentage of your budget should go towards SEO?

Business investment in marketing these days is on the rise, especially in digital marketing.

In fact, for the first time in a decade, marketing growth exceeded 10% from February 2021 to February 2022. According to the latest CMO Survey report, marketing spend grew 11.8% compared to Previous 12 months. And it is expected to grow even faster in the next year, up to 13.6%.

The digital marketing channel specifically accounts for the majority of that marketing spend, at 57.1%. According to the same report, digital marketing spend is expected to grow by a whopping 16.2% over the next year.

But how much of your digital marketing spend goes towards search engine optimization?

In 2019, US companies spent $ 73.38 billion on SEO out of a total of $ 776.30 billion for all digital marketing, about 9.5 percent, according to a previous report by Borrell Associates.

Those who do SEO internally (at least with local businesses) report higher costs and lower returns than hiring a consultant and agency, which produces lower costs and higher returns, according to the report.

“Those who use third parties rate the effectiveness of the third party above their internal capabilities. SEO and web design / development are particularly geared towards greater third party effectiveness “.

That said, SEO is an investment in your company’s future revenue. Think about it:

SEO allows businesses to own the top of the sales funnel – the impressions of your website in search results. Additionally, some industries believe organic search generates 2x more revenue than other channels.

So what determines your SEO budget? I’ll touch it later.

Factors that determine your SEO budget

Factors that determine your SEO budget

What percentage of your budget should go to SEO?

It’s not black and white, but the following factors should determine how much you invest:

1. Your revenue

I recommend that the greater of $ 8,000 per month or 5% to 10% of your business revenue go to SEO. In a highly competitive space, you should lean towards the high end. This is what you will see for companies that are serious about competing.

Spending at least $ 8,000 a month usually allows for a good starting point with extensive expert resources. At the high end, we have six times higher customers every month.

Also, consider how much money you are investing in paid advertising. For example, a national brand running PPC campaigns to attract new customers would have to spend about 25% more on organic SEO. The two channels complement each other to increase website traffic.

I think it’s useful to say that 25% of PPC spend, or at least $ 8,000 per month, is a reasonable estimate of SEO spend for companies using ads.

2. Your competition

Keep in mind that most search engine queries yield at least one million search results. And you have to be on Page 1 to import as well.

Any company that is competing in organic search has its own job to do. But if you find yourself in a difficult niche or are faced with big brands with bigger budgets, you may have to work a little harder and faster.

This often requires an increase in the SEO budget. And you have to be willing to do it or you risk being irrelevant in the search results.

How to decide your SEO budget

How to decide your SEO budget

So you know that two fundamental factors affect your SEO budget: your revenue and your competition. Let’s put this in perspective.

We know there is stiff competition in search results. So the question isn’t just, “How much do you want to spend on SEO?” But also: “How fast do you want to beat the competition?”

This is really what determines your budget. At a minimum, you should spend 5% to 10% of your revenue on SEO. But if you want to move forward faster, you typically spend more.

This doesn’t mean blindly investing in SEO with the promise that more money = better results.

But you need resources. You need to know who you are hiring and they need to have an excellent reputation and deep experience.

If you are using a third party SEO agency, make sure you only hire experts. Unfortunately, many companies are content with cheap SEO services. Cheap SEO is a near-deadly experience and will cost you more time and money to crawl out of the pit you dug than if you were to invest in a sound SEO strategy up front.

With a good budget that a real expert offers, you can learn how to make the most effective SEO moves with the resources you have. And, if you can be more agile than the competition in making those changes, you have a better chance of moving forward.

If you can, take advantage of pushups whenever possible. Those who don’t have the knee-jerk reaction to tug their digital marketing budget when prospects are shaky will have a chance to step up and outdo the competition.

Consider diverting budget to SEO

Consider diverting budget to SEO

If your marketing budget is already exhausted on other channels, consider diverting some of your budget to SEO.

For example, let’s say you’re spending a significant amount on PPC ads. Cropping 5% to 10% of that for SEO shouldn’t be a problem.

Especially when you consider how SEO outperforms PPC on average conversion rates, you’ll thank yourself later. Plus, SEO has a staying power for your brand presence online. You can’t say that for ads – if you turned off advertising tomorrow, you wouldn’t have any residual value in search results.

SEO is more cost-effective in the long run because your optimized web pages can continue to generate traffic for years.

Yes, you need to keep the leads coming in today (be it PPC or something else), so I’m not suggesting that you stop these activities. But if you have a good flow of leads coming in now, invest some of your budget in the future and SEO will get you there.
